Illiteracy breeds poverty. Based on a report by the World Literacy Foundation, illiteracy is costing the Indian economy more than $53 billion. The Right to Education Act is helping to increase infrastructure in schools and there are more restrooms for girls today than there were ever before. Yet, in 2012:
More than 50% of children in grade 5 were reading at level 2 or below.
30% of children in Grade 3 were reading at Grade 1, a drop from 50% in 2008.
The number of children who could count up to 100 had decreased from 70% to 50% in the last 3 years.
Our projects invest in teachers’ salaries and training to ensure children not just attend school, but learn. This campaign is hope for 4000 children. Let us not disappoint them.
