The student attendance in government schools in the Katihar region of Bihar is very low. The students are discouraged from going to school because of poverty and preoccupation with labour work. There are areas where there are no schools in the vicinity. The Jyotirgamaya group has unique model that works towards getting 100% attendace in the schools.
The goal of the project is to have 100% attendance of school going children in the schools.
The group was established in December 1999 with goal of increasing the level of literacy among underprivileged children of Bihar, one of the Indian state with lowest literacy rate. The group has a very simple and modest goal of having every child physically present in the school. The project measures effectiveness through attendance.
