The low quality of government school system in low-income urban areas in Bhopal is an important reason for the high dropout rates observed in these schools. In particular, poor performance in Science and Math plays a critical role in raising dropout rates as children move to higher grades. Ensuring that children who attend these schools receive supplemental Science education to strengthen their academic skills, can therefore be an important lever to reduce dropout rates.
It is with this objective that Samavesh wants to set up a Science Activity Centre, where youth volunteers, from middle and high school, will come and do science activities, create science toys and design and do science projects. Samavesh already has a team of three science teachers to assist with this.
The Science Activity Centre will have –
1. Facilities and equipment for carrying out the science experiments for classes 6th to 10th.
2. Basic workshop facilities and tools to do science project work, including electronic circuitry and design.
3. Basic Computer facilities, with 20 terminals to support computer literacy.
To supplement the Government School System so that children from deprived backgrounds receive better quality education. To build social and technical capacities amongst community members in rural and urban areas, to initiate and sustain changes in education, health and livelihoods.
Samavesh was registered in August 2003 to help create an environment in which vulnerable sections of society, especially from amongst tribals, dalits and women, can strive for a more equitable and democratic society.
Samavesh focuses on marginalized sections of the community, especially women, youth and children. In the field of education, Samavesh develops comprehensive approaches to provide academic support to schools. Samavesh has a long experience of working with government schools and school administration, as well as parents and local communities.
