Asha supports the following at SHED: RCC Classrooms (build 5 pukka classrooms), New kitchen & dining hall (build thatched kitchen cum dining hall), conversion of Multi-purpose kitchen cum dining hall into hostel, and salaries for teachers, Care givers and Community workers salary
Asha's support will help SHED continue to employ good staff members, provide necessary hostel capacity to admit hearing impaired children, and make the school infrastructure safer for the children from its current temporary settings, particularly in the rainy season and in winter.
SHED was started to solve two basic problems:
1.Underprivileged children and children with disabilities in this area have no access to a decent education. Underprivileged children include tribal children living in hamlets, underprivileged girls in the age group 5-18, children who have faced domestic or other violence, orphans, and other poor children. Children with disabilities include physical and mental disabilities.
2. Disabled children are not integrated into mainstream society which causes them to suffer economically and otherwise later in life.
SHED aims to solve the above listed problems by providing an integrated school and residential facilities for the targeted children groups - underprivileged and physically and mentally disabled. This integrated school provides benefits to both groups of children:
- Enables strong interaction between both groups of children without requiring them to study in the same classroom
- Provides a great way for children in crisis and underprivileged children to increase their own self-worth by being buddies to disabled children. The disabled children also build great friendships with people different from their own to increase their own confidence to integrate in mainstream society
Short term goal of SHED is to provide good schooling and development environment for the current students.
Long term goal vision is to enable the underprivileged and disabled children to be grow up as responsible, productive citizens and live with dignity.
