Seeyapoondi is a small village with approximately 500 households. It is in Villupuram Dist. about 5kms from Melmalayanur. The main occupation is farming and the fiels, until a few years back, were well irrigitated from a very large tank system hence the name “Poondi” However the water resources have been depleting quickly as the area has been receiving very scanty rainfall in the last three or four years. The need to find alternate occupations to farming has therefore become a need in this village as also in the other villages in the place where farming thrived until recently.
The village does not have any after school community centres for young people to get together or a place for older people to get together after work to discuss things of common interest and import.
.The village has a primary school. The children go to high and higher secondary classes by govt. buses to a nearby small town. There are only two public bus services a day to Seeyapoondi- once in the morning as pick up and another in the evening for dropping the children going to the high and higher secondary school in Melmalyanoor.
Approximately 10 students pass the SSLC board exams in the village every year. They had been expressing their desire to do better by supervised, joint study with guidance from the educated people in the village. The initial after school tuition classes were set up at the primacy school which is a little removed from the households after dark the villagers were not ready to send the girls to the place because safety issues. The villagers however wish to educate their wards well.
