The aims of the project are:
1) Enhancing the spoken English skills of children attending Kannada-medium governmentaided
schools
2) Developing a curriculum and teaching methodology specific for non-native, low-income
English speakers
3) Monitoring school performance and providing supplementary teaching inputs for highschool
students
4) Building self-esteem, confidence and leadership in adolescent boys and girls through
mentorship activities, and providing opportunities for fun and extracurricular learning
for children of all ages
5) Financial support for high school and college-level students on a need-basis
6) Providing information, guidance and networks for youth to enhance their employment opportunities
Ć To enhance children's interest in learning and their overall motivation and self-esteem,
primarily through a spoken English programme accompanied by mentoring and extracurricular
activities;
Ć To serve as a 'friend' to the community, particularly the youth, by providing information,
resources and networks to meet their education and employability needs;
Ć To educate families about generic and specific health issues through workshops and
awareness-raising camps, and to provide safe and affordable access to health care by
organising health camps in the community;
Ć To inform various sections of the community(ies) about their rights, and enable them to
exercise these rights within their homes, at work and as citizens of the broader society;
Ć To create resource centres within the community(ies), run by members of the
community(ies), that would serve as information nodes on various development issues for
the community(ies);
Ć To establish a model that can be replicated by any individual / organisations committed to
positively impacting socially and economically marginalised communities in urban areas in
a sustainable and holistic manner.
SECA aims to work with children, families and communities to reduce urban
social and economic disparities. We believe in supporting education, health and employability
goals to provide opportunities for positive change.
