Tamil Nadu floods – Relief, Recovery and Rehab

The city of Chennai and its surrounding areas have been hit by the worst floods in 100 years. Unlike the tsunami that affected only the coastal areas, the entire city and neighboring towns and villages have been affected by these floods. People of all socioeconomic status are victimized and those who are underprivileged will suffer the worst in the fight for recovery.

While there is tremendous relief effort planned from government and other organizations, recovery and rehabilitation needs to be ensured to the underprivileged victims especially children. Asha supports over 15 projects in and around Chennai and Cuddalore districts. We have already started supporting immediate relief and we are expecting more to come in the next few weeks to months for rehab and recovery. While these events get a lot of press – the interest fades away as quickly as the waters recede. But, the process of rehabilitation is long drawn – and needs sustained support.
