Clothes Drive for IRC

Asha Dallas conducted a clothes drive for helping the refugees in the DFW community. Asha Dallas was able to collect close to fifty bags of clothes, shoes, toys and books to support the refugees in Dallas. We also had close to 10 strollers and a few car seats to donate.

When all the donations were ready, five Asha volunteers visited the International Rescue Committee office and delivered them. The coordinator Mel was overwhelmed to see so many donations coming in at once and their storage room hardly had any space to accommodate. We had a one hour discussion with Mel to understand the problems faced by these refugees. She patiently answered all our questions in detail. Overall the team is doing a wonderful job in giving a home to people who have been forced to leave their own countries.

The refugees come in every year and need support in all sorts of ways to settle down in a new country, new culture and language. They also need mentors to get them oriented to the day-to-day activities and understand how things work starting from getting DART passes, using an ATM machine, driving a car to finding a job.

If any of you are interested in mentoring a family, please contact Mellisand LeRoy @ the IRC Dallas.

Asha 18 Conference

It was a three day learning experience for many Asha volunteers from across the country. Conducted every other year during the Memorial day weekend Asha Dallas had the privilege to host the conference this year. The event marks the 18th year of the launch of the organization.

The theme of the conference was ‘Learning’ and we had the opportunity to learn from imminent speakers like Jane Sahi, Bablu Ganguli (Timbaktu Collective), Dr.Sankurathi, Mamatha, Dr.Balaji Sampath and Dr.Madan Vashishta.

Books Drive conducted by Kids Chapter

After a grueling year of school the Asha kids were instantly ready to start on a project as soon as summer vacation began. The younger kids came up with an idea of doing a books drive to benefit the under resourced classrooms in the US. BookFirst.org is a non-profit organization that accepts book donations and also distributes based on need. The kids collected close to 1000 books (250 pounds) within a month’s time, sorted them out according to different age groups and sent them to Brownsville, Texas.

Independence Day and Anand Bazaar

We started the Independence Day celebrations with an Independence Day Run at White Rock Lake. Close to 20 Team Asha runners, all in their blue team asha t-shirts assembled at 6am Saturday morning and sang the national anthem before the run. We then set out in different groups to do six, seven and nine mile runs. A lot of Saturday morning runners noticed us and got to know that it was India's Independence on August 15th

At Anand Bazaar that evening, we sold close to 600 flags and tri color glow bands. There were more than 40 volunteers to help with the stall activities and people thronged the Asha booth for face painting and Mehendi.
