Hello all,
This year two of my main motivations in life have collided in a spectacular way — supporting education while getting and keeping myself physically fit and healthy as I’m training to run the Chicago marathon in early October and raising funds for Asha for Education in the process!!
What you and me and many others take for granted – access to a quality education – is a dream for many all across the world. In India in particular, UNESCO statistics show that 35% of the world’s illiterate people live in the country and without a dramatic shift in addressing this situation, by the year 2020 over 50% of the world’s illiterate population will live in India. This is unacceptable.
Asha for Education is committed to improving basic education in India head-on and in my research of organizations, it’s track record is nearly impeccable. Asha for Education is a zero-overhead, 100% volunteer driven organization with a goal to provide access to education for underprivileged children, promoting universal education & decreasing child labor. It’s rated the #1 charity in the field of International Relief & Development by Charity Navigator, America’s premier independent evaluator of over 5,300 charities.
The Chicago chapter of Asha for Education in particular supports more than seven projects in India. Aralu: Pre-primary school centers, Asmita: Teaching and training of slow learners, Gramya and Navjyoti: Education support with stress on education of girls. While the running and training have been a challenge to say the least, having never ran longer than a 10K race before, I’m progressing and I’m looking forward to the marathon! It would even mean more and push me further to have your support — I’ve set a goal for myself to raise $1,400 and would greatly appreciate any support to this very worthy cause.
