This is my third year trying to raise funds for ASHA. One of the reasons I try to raise funds for ASHA is because I am very concerned about the ever increasing income gap between the “haves” and “have nots” in India. I am a 100% convinced that if nothing is done to address this gap it is going to lead to an uprising which could have disastrous consequences for the future of India. Put another way, I believe that if India is to have a future then this issue needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
At first glance any attempt to reduce this gap might seem like a gargantuan task, but we have to start somewhere correct? And I believe that the key factor in reducing this gap is education. I see education as the only way out for children unfortunate enough to fall into the category of have nots. A proper education will show these children that they do not have to accept their lot in life, a proper education will show these kids that there is a better life awaiting them if they want it and a proper education will prepare these kids to face the challenges they will encounter as they attempt to better their lot.
Over the last few months there has been a lot of news coming out of India, most of it detailing how the common man/woman in India is finally expressing his/her frustration with the rampant corruption practiced by those in power. This is a very exciting development but in order for this movement to sustain, future generations of Indians will have to participate in huge numbers. Only a comprehensive education can prepare our next generation for the challenges ahead of them when they try to tackle the monster that is corruption.
This is why I am running for ASHA. They seem undaunted by the task ahead of them and have for several years now tirelessly raised funds and have assisted in the setting up of many schools in India.
